NHTSA Proposes Seat Belt Reminders for Back Seat Passengers

May 09, 2024May 09, 2024

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published a proposed rule that would require car seat belt warnings for backseat passengers. Seat belt warning systems are currently only required for car drivers, flashing a light and sounding an audio signal if the seat belt is not fastened.

Officials report that fatalities from car accidents have increased since the COVID-19 pandemic and the NHTSA estimates that nearly half of people killed in 2021 traffic crashes were not wearing a seat belt at the time of impact.

“This proposed rule can help reduce that number by getting more to buckle up,” Acting NHTSA Administrator Ann Carlson stated.
